So...this is not part of our assignment for this week, but when we were supposed to pick--out of a lifetime of photo taking--our most beloved pictures to put on the wall in the hall, I thought of this one, though I forgot that it was portrait orientation, and so I did not have the right frame. Once I thought of it, I wanted you all to see it, cuz dang it, I love this picture. I love these two people. My dad in a familiar gesture when my sister's kids and my kids were wee tots and he was "Grandpa Farm," giving kids tractor rides and enjoying the baby pigs in all of the other glories of farm life. That's my eldest, in all of her chubby two-year-old glory, reaching up, because it's her time to ride. Maybe it's also lucky that her orange shorts go with the orange on the tractor, and her blue shirt matches Grandpa's clothing. (And hey, people, look at the SPACES between her fingers!--Pertinent to class pointers from Barbara. :))I don't know. I just love it, and it puts me right back there to look at this picture. But it was pretty much just a lucky snap taken with a Canon Rebel, probably set on auto mode or something "auto." I have a whole bunch of "farm" pictures in this theme of Christine at this age. She's graduating from high school this year, and it would be fun to fix these up a bit in Photoshop to recapture the vivid colors and put them in a slide show or a collage for her (and for my dad). No need to use up class time to discuss this one. I just wanted you to see it and take advantage of the blog technology in case anybody has ideas about how to fiddle with this to make it better.
Okay, here's more....This is one of my other very-most-favorites. The mail rolled up in his back pocket is so typical of Dad, and again, there are his hands, and I can tell by Christine's posture that she's just casually loving it, the whole Grandpa thing.

There's women's work to do on the farm, too, and Christine helped with Grandma Farm's laundry.

  1. Love the series of pictures as it tells a story and has emotion. I like the orange in the tractor pictures and the human vertical lines along with the round tractor tires.

  2. BETH!!
I absolutely am in love with the picture with all the stockings hanging. The close up beneath it just tells me what she's doing which is obviously very important work of clipping that clothes pin on the toe of the stocking. The lines aren't perfectly straight but that is the point and I don't think I would have liked it so much if they were. The shadows on the ground do add depth and the 3D aspect to the picture. I also REALLY like the first photo where Christine is stretching to be picked up... the negative space around the fingers is ESSENTIAL to her eagerness too... thanks for sharing these!!

  3. Chelsea, if you don't attach clothes pins to the toes of the stockings, they flap around in the wild Wisconsin winds so much that, all along your clothesline, you end up with your undies in a bunch.
