Bruce - Self Portrait
I wouldn't say there was a real "AHAH" moment here, but after several attempts to adjust my studio lights to avoid any shadows just two feet behind me, and after playing with the built-in flash settings to lighten the darker side of my face, I was relatively happy with this shot. It was taken with my 14-45mm zoom lens set at 45mm with an aperture of F/5.6 at 1/4 of a second. ISO was set at 100 and white balance was set on automatic. The flash setting was 0 EV, and the picture is cropped from the original, which was taken in landscape format.

Given that you used your built-in flash I think this a pretty good photo. It makes me want to try this, probably will! You mentioned playing with your studio lights, so you had an external flash behind you and also used your built in flash (did I understand that right)? Also, I like how there are no hard shadow lines or hot spots. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteThanks for you comment. Actually, my studio lights consisted of a 115-120 volt blue "Photo EBW" bulb in one reflector and a 150 watt soft light bulb in another reflector. The latter one was bounced off an adjacent wall.
DeleteI agree, bruce, it is great the way that this picked up all of your different skin tones in a gentle way. We can see the differences and shapes and lines, and yet none of it is harsh. To make the photo more wall-worthy, I would like to see you against a darker background, but then would doing that have influenced the kind of light you got?
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed the lighting!
